STEMA Relief Kenya began in 2010 with a simple act of kindness. Our founder, Stevenson Maranga, opened his home in Kisii to care for two orphaned children affected by poverty and the HIV/AIDS crisis. Kisii, like many parts of western Kenya, faced high poverty levels and a growing number of vulnerable children. But the situation was even more severe in neighboring Migori County, which continues to record some of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the country, contributing to one of the largest populations of orphaned children in Kenya.
As more families sought support, the number of children in Stevenson’s care quickly grew. The small Kisii home could no longer provide adequate space for shelter, education, and daily care. By 2014, expansion was necessary—but land in Kisii was too costly, making it difficult to build a bigger, safer environment.
Most of the children we supported came from Migori County, especially from communities close to the Tanzania border. After careful consideration, we chose to relocate to Isebania, a place with more affordable land and a high concentration of vulnerable families. Moving to Isebania allowed us to build a children’s home, a school, and a sustainable support system where children could grow in dignity.
Over time, the organization—originally known as STEDA Relief Kenya—continued to evolve. After one of the co-founders stepped away, we embraced a new identity that honours our roots while reflecting our future.
The name STEMA symbolizes our transformation and commitment to serving communities with compassion, integrity, and long-term impact. Today, STEMA is recognized across Migori County and East Africa for:
Supporting thousands of orphans and vulnerable children
Providing education scholarships, feeding programs, hygiene kits, and psychosocial support
Empowering youth, women, and persons with disabilities
Building partnerships that strengthen community resilience
Creating a nurturing environment where children can thrive academically and socially
Many of the children who once arrived with nothing have now graduated, secured employment, or returned as volunteers, helping the next generation rise.
From a tiny house in Kisii to a growing institution in Migori County, STEMA Relief Kenya continues to be a living testimony of hope, compassion, and transformation.
